COD MW2 Crashing PC on launch. (Battle.Net launcher)

Hello, I have recently started using a new PC and am having issues running the game. Everytime I run the new COD it fully crashes my PC, black screens and resets.
I have tried multiple different things to get it running and none have worked. I have no issues running any other games on this PC just MW2 from the battle.net launcher. I can still run games like overwatch and cyberpunk and am really just looking for any help anyone can offer.

I have a Ryzen 9 5900x CPU, a NVidia 3080 and an ASUS B550-E motherboard and am using 32GB of Ram.

Hopefully someone else has experienced something similar to what I have and has found a fix for this.

I had a problem with the monitor shuts down, i though i was an error in the software.
But it was a faulty graphicscard powercable. A 3080 use alot of power.
In windows controlpanel under system and security pc status you can see what went wrong.
The only problem i have now is the game freeze up with an error in a file called game_ship.exe.
I traced it back too the battle.net launcher, apperently a common error in in cod

Did your old computer run the game without problems or is this first time for this game on the new rig?

What windows version are you running?

Im running a EVGA 3080 so I know that the card you have is sufficient and you have tons of ram.

I guess the best start is too make sure that you have the latest video drivers from nvidia.com. I am currently using driver ver. 527.56. When you install any new drivers make very sure to use the "clean install" method as it completely removes the previous version. I dont know if you use GeForce Experience option at all but I can say that I dont ever install that when updating my drivers.

Another thing to try, if you havent already, is to use the "scan and repair" tool which you can find in the Battlenet launcher by clicking on the gear symbol beside the Play button and choose that option.

Windows recently released their newest 22H2 version for Windows 11 if you are using that version.

Check your Device Manager in Windows to see if you have any yellow exclamation marks which would indicate some missing drivers.

I am using the Asus Z690 motherboard and had to download new firmware for that board as well as find a bunch of drivers that would not load which meant a lot of hunting. I finally found a great piece of trial software that actually found a ton of missing drivers for me (from a very well known and respected software company) that I can share with you if that is allowed here or I can provide it privately if required.

I will leave it at this for now and see how it works out for you. Good Luck!!

LOL, I see that you fixed it while I was typing!! Good Stuff! Yeah, those 3080's require that all 3 pci-e power connectors be plugged in if your card has 3.

What power supply size are you using if I can ask?

I am running windows 10 pro, I have done the scan and repair and that made no difference. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the game and this made no difference.

I do have GeForce experience downloaded, the thing I find strange is that this can still run any other game it is just MW2 that I am struggling with.

So once the launcher small window finishes loading and it would usually switch from that to the fullscreen the PC restarts.

And also the card can run other games on max visual specs such as cyberpunk on very high everything.

I'm really baffled as to what it could be.

If this is true so far then go into the game settings and try different combinations of video settings to see if that makes any difference. Also try to turn off texture streaming in the settings too.

Have you done a full bios flash on the motherboard if one is available??

   1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.
   2. Select the Processes tab.
   3. Highlight all Agent, Blizzard Battle.net desktop app, and game processes, then select End Process.
2. Navigate to the folder containing the Battle.net directory:
   1. Press Windows Key+R to open the Run dialogue.
   2. Type C:\ProgramData\ into the Open field and press Enter.
3. Delete the Battle.net folder.
4. Run Battle.net and update the game.

Mayby its a long shot but it cant hurt too try

If you are going to try what DangerousSID suggests, and I agree, you might as well do what I suggested to another member here and delete a couple of other folders on your harddrive too. This will help to make sure that when you reinstall the game that everything is fresher and clean. Check the images below and delete the complete Call of Duty folders in both the Program Files (x86) and in Documents.







You will be having to do a complete install again after you delete all these things mentioned above by both of us. I would also recommend that you completely shut down your computer and then turn it back on to make sure that the computer boots up clean.

Hello, thank you for your comment. No this isn't the case. The game gets to the inital loading box just the small windown that opens up with the loading progress bar, then once the game fully loads and would normally switch to fullscreen it crashes. This is before any menus or anything come up. No U haven't done a bios flash, nor do I know how to do one. Thank you for any help you can offer.

No progress yet, I hadn't been able to do much to it over the christmas period but will try to follow the suggestions that have been made prevously and update as I do.

One of the issues I faced when originally trying to resolve this was that I had no COD folder in my documents, I was looking for ages as I thought I shouldve had one but couldn't find it and just wrote it off.

UPDATE: I have just done all the above suggestions and this still has not worked, my PC still crashed and restarted at the same point as it originally did. I am not sure what to do please does anyone have anymore suggestions on what I could do?

Still a few things to check. Precision X1 from EVGA is a good piece of software to monitor things at your video card. When I downloaded and installed it I was surprised to see it download and install some missing DirectX components. Another way to get these is to go to Microsoft and download them too.

I think I could resolve the problem finally.

I was researching more content of people who experienced the same problem and then I found a video where it's given some paths to deal with it. And the explanation provided really makes sense.

The steps which I followed is basically to turn off the "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" option. (Windows system).

I'm using windows11 and found this option with the following path:
(DISPLAY -> GRAPHICS -> DEFAULT GRAPHICS SETTINGS)

I followed the advice and I've been running COD without that problem.

*** And, just because I could see that the guy was also with the "Variable refresh rate" off, I kept the same in my computer. And even because playing COD I set a FPS limit, so have this option seems like doesn't make sense at all. At least to play COD. ***

He actually gives more than one way to tackle this issue, but the first path seems was enough.

About the BIOS of my GPU I checked it was running the latest version, and also the drivers. And the problem is in this last one. This version of driver and the hardware-accelerated option mentioned above generate the problem.

Oh here is another thing that can help with your motherboard and computer in general. It is called Asus Armoury Crate. (See the link below) From it you can do a ton of stuff to fine tune and garner lots of information about your hardware. This program can also detect any missing files etc and do it for you.

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions posted on this thread, they were all helpful and I learned a bit more about my PC, so thanks again for that.

So down to the fix, it turned out that it was simply that I was running on an outdated version of my motherboard BIOS, once I updated this and went onto a lot newer version everything seems to be running smoothly and I have had no issues since.

If anyone runs into similar issues in the future this might be worth checking.

Glad to hear that you got it resolved. In my years working on computers and as a certified tech one of the first things I learnt is to take all steps in an organized manner. First thing is to look at the bios and expand outward from there!!
